I am only in the first few months of my pg, and have iregular h/b and shortness of breath leading to anxiety. Anyone else experienced this. It is making me feel quite unwell, often i feel my heart missing a beat then trying to catch up. What is up? i do remember the odd feeling like this in previoue pg but not all afternoon.

I get this when I'm not pregnant too, they told me its calle cardiac arithmia (sp) which I think just means irregular heat beat. Ive been hospitalised a few times because of it on oxygen and lots of GREAT drugs lol...it did seem to get worse during pregnancy, but as someone mentioned above, my iron tests came back vry low and once i was on iron pills it seemed to get ALOT better, I still get it now but mainly when Im sick or rundown.. Are you iron pills or any kind of supplement, eg Elevit? I found sipping ice cot water and fresh air helps alot too.

Hey Rudy, just given your symptoms, I would advise that you do go to a GP and get checked out. You shouldn't be getting extremely out of breath at 16 weeks (but of course some people do!).
There's a condition called peripartum cardiomyopathy that most m/w's don't seem to pay enough attention to during pregnancy, but the symptoms are mainly tiredness, shortness of breath, swollen ankles...so they always seem to tell you that you are low on iron or tired or it's just normal pregnancy, but a friend of mine was told this and she had this condition (it's caused by the hormones of pregnancy damaging your heart) and she almost died and the baby she was pregnant with did die. She was only a week away from giving birth too.
I really don't like to alarm people, but sometimes heart issues aren't just a normal part of pregnancy like most people believe and it always pays to get checked out by a GP just in case.

I used to get these types of things ages ago, but at the time I used to get really bad anxiety and panic attacks. I think its one of those things once you become aware of it...its hard to stop noticing it! I've had ECGs and they always came back normal. My doctor explained to me how its easy to become over sensitised to it having had anxiety etc and that most people have palpatations every day, they just don't notice it they way someone who gets a touch of anxiety does. its a vicious circle once you've noticed it, as it then puts you on edge and you notice it each time!! My doctor said if I get them, to just hold my breath and sort of bear down into my chest and it should stop them. He said sometimes its just a case of things getting out of kilter and when you do that it helps things to readjust. I must admit I hardly ever notice it now....and when I do I just think to myself its normal, everyone has them and just think your fine!

How far along are you Rudy? I think the more pregnant you are ie. when baby is pushing on your organs then its normal to get short of breath but at the early stages it is a sign of iron deficiancy

Wow me too ive been getting ridiculously short of breath. Even walking up my driveway which is on i slope but only maybe 20m & im huffing & puffing & its crazy. Im not HUGE but i was thinking wow i must be so unfit. I text midwife & she said it was increase in blood & didnt seem fussed. Has been bugging me though & i think its normal we worry :-)
Any idea how long it lasts generally coz ive been short of breath for a good couple weeks now?

Are your iron levels normal?? My GP told me mine were low at the 6 week bloods but said I couldnt take anything for it until after 12 weeks and was getting really short of breath, when i saw the OB at 10weeks he disagreed and after I started taking iron pills I havent been short of breath since

heya a wee while back before i knew i was pg i had same sorta thing happen my heart started racing got really short of breath and whole bunch of other things and anyway ended up at the docs with a ECG it led to a anxiety attack which is fricken scary i had never had one in my life and anyway they put me on some diazapam(sp?) which i don't think is safe for pregnancy but it worked and brought my heart rate back down 2 normal!

I just had a thort - a few years ago i read an articel about fast heart arrythmia's..... it said if it happened to take in a breath hold it and at the same time blow out your nose (dont let it out your mouth tho - keep it closed). I had a pt at work who kept getting a racing heart and i told him to try it - it stopped them pretty quickly when it happened. - Might have to try it a few times in a row
