Moving from car seat to booster seat

What would you like to talk about?

Hi my daughter doesn't turn 3 for another month, but she is REALLY tall and her head is already above the top of some of our car seats and she barely squishes in our existing seats - we are thinking it is time to move to a booster seat - websites seem to say that they should be around 4 before they go to a booster seat though. So, my question to others with tall children - when did you move yours to a booster seat?

My older daughter is tall for her age.  At 3 years old she was 98cm tall.  She had been in a Safe'n'sound Royale car seat, but she grew too tall for that, so we got a Safe'n'sound Maxi Rider seat with an adjustable head rest, to allow for more height growth.  It has a 5 point harness which can be used till the child is 18kg, then you either use the car's 3 point seatbelt with the carseat, or do like we did and got the S'n's Protecta harness which works with the seat and tethers to the tether bolt point in the car.

She's just turned 4 and is 108cm tall and still enough room in the carseat height wise.

There are many high backed booster type seats (like the S'n's Maxi Rider) that have inbuilt harnesses which go to a set weight range, and then allow you to use the car's 3 point belt with the seat.

If you go for a booster type seat, the ones with a high back are best (as opposed to the ones that are just a base with no seat back)

If she is too big, she is too big. Probably safer to be in a booster even tho she's a bit young than be in a seat that is too small.

You can get boosters with 5 point harnesses if you are really worried, they have the height of a booster but the 5 point harness is a bit safer than the regular seat belt.

My DS was 2.5 years when he went into a booster seat - Plunket told me it goes on their weight not their age.  He was 18kg which is apparently when they move to a booster seat.
