PCOS/Metformin

What would you like to talk about?

There is probably a thread about this somewhere but I can't be bothered looking for it!
Just wanting to hear about anyone that suffers from PCOS and has been prescribed something to help with the physical side effects (ie bad skin, hirsutism etc).
I have suspected PCOS and since coming off the pill my skin has been driving me mad and I'm dying to find something that will help that you can take while TTC. Seems that most skin specialists or GPs will prescribe birth control pill or steroids which obviously doesn't help TTC.

The only hair problem I have noticed that bothers me is the hairs on my arms got darker when I came of the pill and have considered waxing them.

I have heard a little about metformin on this site and wondered if anyone had any success with overcoming these symptoms (and any others) of PCOS by taking metformin? Any advice appreciated : )

Hi, I have pcos, when I went off the pill (which I went on in my teens for bad skin) I started getting some major acne. My pcos was only diagnosed a few months ago, but all the drs I've talked to about taking something to clear up my skin have said that nothing is safe while ttc. I have found a natural homemade face scrub works really well for me, http://m.youtube.com/watch?feature=plpp&v=e--d_n073pc this is where I got it from, it uses green tea, apple cider vinegar, honey and white sugar. When i found out about my pcos i also found out that I have problems with insulin resistance, so have reduced a lot of the sugar in my diet, including natural sugars such as fruit, and found that helped a bit too. My skin definitely flates up if I have a bit of a binge! Drs all said to me that when I get pregnant my skin should clear up too.

    Good luck!

I've been on metformin for PCOS for a couple of years and though it regulated my cycles it didn't really help me lose any weight or clearing up my skin. I still struggle to get my weight down but what really helped with clearing up my skin was a few months ago when I stopped eating sugar (I read Sweet Poison by David Gillespie). It was amazing.. I used to get the big sore bumps along my jawline and across my cheeks and chin but they cleared right up within weeks. I don't use expensive skin products just a supermarket cleanser and moisturiser and coconut oil at night. I still get small break outs just before my period but nowhere near as bad as it used to be.

I have PCOS and was on Metformin for it but it only regulated my cycles didn't help with acne, hairy bits or weight loss. I somehow managed to get pg with ds. We hadn't been using contraception for 2 years but we weren't actively trying and bingo. I agree with D I felt the best I ever had whilst pg. My skin is alot better since I started using DS's butt wipes (Huggies unscented wipes) on my face (hey we are on a budget!). My skin used to make me so depressed and I was stressed about going anywhere when it was bad so I really do feel for you. I pluck hairy bits but now MIL has beauty salon so will get lazer, yay! GL

Yes although i don't have insulin resistence but i'm still on it. Hasn't helped my weight loss! There's good evidence to say that metformin and clomiphene mixture is more effective than 1 or the other alone so thats worth keeping in mind.

I'm on Metformin for PCOS but i don't ovulate regularly on it. I don't really think it does anything but they're keeping me on it because it's meant to reduce miscarriage rate in women with PCOS if i fall pregnant and also sensitises me to some drugs (although i still didn't ovulate on the clomiphene). Evening Primrose Oil is good to use. It helps with cervical mucas which is good for TTC and also helps with the skin thing. As for the hair problem...well waxing or lazer hair removal is good. Depends on your budget though. Unfortunately the best treatment for PCOS is the pill but that doesn't help those of us TTC!

How long were you trying for Rachel?

So, if metformin doesn't help with skin etc, what is it prescribed for? regulating cycles?

Sheesh those products are pricey delta! Might give them a go though. Is there anywhere in particular you get them from at a good price?

I had PCOS while on the pill, stopped pill, had cyst removed in hospital (painful) and after so many years fell pregnant.
Weird things our bodies are !

Hey Mich - I've always had acne worries because of PCOS. I'm on clomiphene but not on Metformin.

After coming off the pill I had skin concerns so I changed my skin care routine - I recommend::

    Cleansing Cream Dr. Hauschka
    Triology Roseship oil
