Giving birth does not have to be a painful and stressful experience says childbirth educator Caterina Findsen of Koru Self Development.
“Hypnobirthing® is a relaxing, stress-free method of birthing that is based on the belief that all babies should come into the world in an atmosphere of gentleness, calm and joy,”
“Hypnobirthing® is a relaxing, stress-free method of birthing that is based on the belief that all babies should come into the world in an atmosphere of gentleness, calm and joy,” says Caterina.
HypnoBirthing lets you discover and experience the joy and magic of birth – rather than the horrific ordeal everyone else seems hell-bent on telling you about. Most importantly, you’ll learn how to put yourself back in control of your birth – working with your baby and your body’s own rhythm and surges.
Caterina is based in Hamilton. In her small classes of up to four couples, Caterina teaches self-hypnosis, deep relaxation, visualisation and breathing techniques to assist mothers when giving birth. Birthing partners are given the skills to help the mother on the day with affirmations and gentle massage. Classes run for 2-2½ hrs over five weeks, and as an alternative, occasional weekend workshops are held.
The idea that birthing has to be painful is a Western concept; other cultures do not have this association. HypnoBirthing techniques teach mothers how to create endorphins, the body’s own natural pain killers and to let go of any fears, negative emotions or limiting thoughts they may have about childbirth.
A misconception about HypnoBirthing is that mothers go into a sleep-like state and are not aware of what is happening to them. Mothers are completely aware of what they’re doing. HypnoBirthing is about empowering a woman to listen to and trust her body during the natural process of birth.
Many Mums and especially their partners are sceptical at first, but soon change their minds when they learn more about HypnoBirthing. It also gives the Dad a crucial role to fulfil; helping the mother stay calm and focussed on the techniques they have been taught and not just be a helpless onlooker in the delivery room.
If after 36 weeks you find that your baby is in a breech presentation and there is talk of a possible surgical birth, phone Caterina who will help you with special hypnosis sessions that have been found to be especially successful in achieving the desired turn. When the turning of the breech baby is achieved through relaxation and tension release, the baby usually remains in vertex position.
