I'm having my third baby in two months. I breastfed my first for 18 months without too many issues. My second turned out to have a subtle tongue tie that wasn't picked up until he was about a month old, when it was snipped. I had mastitis almost continuously for six weeks and two abscesses - it was pretty nasty but we got through it and I weaned him at 12 months.
Given that the problems didn't become apparent until he was about ten days old, how will I know if this one has the same sort of issue? I'd like to prevent going through the same sort of drama if I can.
The fact that you are already planning for the possibility is a sure sign that your second baby issues around tongue tie and recurrent mastitis and abscesses for yourself won't happen - because you will act with speed and clarity if you observe even a moderate or subtle tongue tie in your third baby.
It would be wise to discuss your concerns with your midwife or obstetrician during your pregnancy and have them check your baby's mouth soon after birth when a tongue tie is quite easy to see when the baby utters its first cries.
Also observe your baby's latching carefully and if this is painful or baby is slipping off your breast onto the end of the nipple stop immediately. And if repeated latching doesn't sort out the challenge see your LMC or a Lactation Consultant at the maternity hospital or at the nearest Plunket Family Centre as soon as possible.
Good Luck!
