Bentyl for colic - Google it

What would you like to talk about?

This topic was inactive for 6 months and has been closed to new posts. We hope you'll join the conversation by posting to an open topic or starting a new one by visiting http://www.treasures.co.nz/Community/Forum/

I was recently reading a forum where someone mentioned they were prescribed bentyl for a colicy baby. I am visiting my GP for the 3rd time on Friday as my DD has been so hard to settle and I decided to Google Bentyl to see what this does as I was going to ask my GP for this and I read this
"Antispasmodics, such as dicyclomine hydrochloride (for example, Bentyl) and hyoscyamine sulfate (for example, Levsin). These have serious side effects. For example, Bentyl can cause a baby to stop breathing, have seizures, or even to die suddenly. It is no longer approved for use in the United States in babies younger than 6 months of age."
I don't know about other mothers but his freaked me out enough to not ask for it. I would rather a crying baby then risk these effects and being that it is proven studies I thought other mothers who may consider using this (like I was) may want to know this.

Oh yeah was supposed to say that my sister who is a naturopath also told me to get probiotics as I am formula feeding and I think they are just to strong for her as the nights we gave her these the colic was worse but maybe that was just coinsendence but now I am to scared to try them again haha.

Thanks. I took my DD to an osteo this morning at a madly rushed last minute decision when she wouldn't take her bottle which is not like her at all. My doc had been thinking she may have reflux but more of a silent reflux and sure enough the osteo told me the top of her tummy was distressed so it was maikig it herd for food to make it into the stomach. Fingers crossed a few treatments will help as the nights have been really hard on me and my DH and not to mention what our poor DD is going through it just breaks our hearts to see her in pain like that.

My osteo recommended I give DS probiotics for colic management - I found this report really interesting. I got a pottle for $50 (yikes) from Hardys. I don't know that it really worked but we were desperate. AFter a month of colicky type behaviour I realised it was lack of routine and ability to self soothe that was the real problem. I can't find the link to the study but some info can be found at http://www.healthy.co.nz/healthy-developments-news-item-424.html
