Dawn til dusk in Dunedin
Strolling around a new destination with littlies in tow can quickly result in tired, grizzly kids and disappointing experiences when you settle for the first option in front of you. We asked mum of three, Martha Dewey, to fill a day with kid-friendly activities
8AM Breakfast at Plaza Cafe
Arguably the most family-friendly cafe in town, with a fully fenced play area that includes giant Lego and Connect Four. There are also many child friendly options on the menu.
10.30AM Morning tea at the Toitu Otago Settlers Museum
Interactive experiences for little ones include boarding a tram or bus and dressing up as an early settler to explore a ship. A children's room has toys and comfy chairs for parents to relax. Great coffee and child-friendly fare served at the cafe.
12PM Lunch at the Otago Museum
The all-new Perpetual Guardian Planetarium immerses children in a starry universe. Check out the Victorian style 'Animal Attic', full of taxidermy animals and pinned insects from around the world. Run free on the grassy Museum Reserve and sample food truck fare. A interactive science centre and refurbished tropical butterfly house is also open!
2PM Afternoon tea at Macandrew Bay
A peninsula suburb of Dunedin with a harbour-side beach created for public enjoyment. Calm waters make it perfect for little paddlers. Sit on the beach with fish and chips from the Macandrew Bay Store.
3PM Afternoon tea at Dunedin Botanic Gardens
Feed ducks with free food from the information centre; climb on statues, including Peter Pan, Chippie (the dog) and a giant worm; and explore an aviary, playground and take a train ride (in summer).
3.30PM Story time at the University Book Shop
The University Book Shop has been operating for more than 70 years and is so magical. Take your littlies along to a free story time in their dedicated children’s room at 10.30am and 3.30pm every Friday and at 10.30am Saturday mornings.
5PM Dinner at Cobb & Co
Retro favourite Cobb & Co reopened this year in Dunedin’s historic Railway Station building. Flash back to your own childhood with cobb crunchies and traffic light mocktails while activity packs, a giant fish tank and play area enchant the kiddies.
