Elk and Me Q&A
Joining us on the runway for NZ Fashion Week is Elk and Me, a sustainable and organic clothing company for littlies. We catch up with Didi and Tony, the husband and wife team behind the brand...
Elk and Me is a new label – and it’s your first time at Fashion Week. Tell us about your brand?
Elk and Me want to make a BIG impression on little people and a small impression on the planet. Our clothes are playful and colourful, for both boys and girls, they are durable, functional and also kind to the environment. Though our clothes are better suited to climbing trees than walking the catwalk, the Little Treasures Mum & Kids show is such a fun way to show you our brand new summer range. We're really excited to be involved.
What's the philosophy behind the label?
Our philosophy is to design children's clothing that is sustainable, gender free and most of all - fun!
Why ethical and organic?
It just makes sense. Organic cotton uses no genetically modified seeds, bans all use of pesticides, uses 71% less water and 62% less energy. This has such a massive effect on both people and planet. All Elk and Me garments are made from GOTS (global organic textile standard) and fair trade certified organic cotton to ensure a premium product, without taking advantage of the planet or anyone on it.
Are other kids clothes boring?
Organic and ethical children's clothing is traditionally made up of a soft and natural colour palette. We like to keep it bright and colourful - kids have the rest of their lives to wear beige, right? They also say that young children remember colours better than words. We think that our not-so-mellow-yellow juicy orange colours are pretty memorable, it's so important to let kids live life in colour.
What's your best advice for dressing kids?
Keep it comfortable. When I dress Lina, my lively 18 month old, in some colourful leggings and t-shirt for the day, I feel like it's better for her.
What can we expect in the Fashion Week show?
A lot of cute little people dressed in our bright summer range.
Is there one key piece?
Our collection Elk and Friends is made to mix and match, so all the garments can be put together in some way - the combinations are endless.
Where are your clothes stocked?
Our clothes can be found in our online store. Visit www.elkandme.co.nz for a look at the full range!
