Travelling whilst pregnant
Thinking about jetting away? Many couples plan a final trip away for just the two of them before baby arrives. Here is what you need to know for when planning your trip.
- While there are no official restrictions about flying, many airlines do not permit pregnant women to travel after 35 weeks and some will require a medical certificate specifying your due date.
- If you’re going long-haul be aware that the risk of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) increases during pregnancy as the viscosity of the blood tends to increase. To combat that, wear DVT-preventative socks, try to stretch and stay mobile as much as possible, and drink lots of water to prevent dehydration.
- The best times to travel are in the second trimester once the risk of miscarriage has decreased but before the final months when the possibility of complications increases.
- This is also the perfect time to escape on what many call a ‘babymoon’. A romantic holiday spending some precious time together and relaxing before the arrival of your little one. Some choose to head overseas to an island, or to explore another part of the country, but it can be just as simple as getting away from your regular routine for a few days and spend time being a couple before becoming a family.
